So I have recently started running in the past week and have just gone on my third since I began a week or two ago. I am by no means an expert runner and have literally been on three runs but I thought it might be quite good to do little update on how it’s going and how to actually start the whole running thing as actually getting up and going is the thing that most people find the hardest!

The first thing I would say is that you have to actually want to do it. If you don’t there is no way you will be able to keep it up as it something that you will either enjoy or hate. Don’t start doing it because you feel you have to, there are so many other ways of exercising that you will find something that you like. When I was younger I was always more of a sprinter and could never get into long distance running but now I don’t so any sprinting and am starting to enjoy the longer runs!

When starting to run, I would alwyas say to set some realistic goals – the key word being realistic! If you set goals to high that it’s impossible to meant, it’s just going to bring down your confidence and discourage you from running again but goals are somthing that can encouage you to improve. I run down a river near my house and there are lots of benches that run up the path. The challenge I set it that each time I go for a run an extra bench or two. They aren’t that far apart but each time I am slightly improving my distence and I also feel like I have accomplished something every time I go!

Invest in some running gear. Don’t go out and buy the most expensive running leggings on the market but just get something that you feel comfortable and good in. When you first start running you can feel self-conscious so this can help! I like to go running in the evenings so that there are less people about however I feel that in my most recent run I felt a lot less self conscious and felt much better about myself so it does improve eventually!

Finally I would say enjoy it! Even if you are doing it for the health benefits it should still be fun! It’s a great thing to do and even just going on one run should be seen as an accomplishment – I know I felt like that! If you are self-conscious just think how you are doing something that is good for you and how it could make a difference! If you’re not sure whether you want to start or not, all you have to do it take 20 minutes from your normal routine to give it a go and see if it is something for you.

Hope you enjoy and good luck with the running!
